Three steps that you can take to promote Gender Equality

Let's face it. The society we live in is nowhere close to being Gender Equal.

In 2021, India was at a dismal rank of 140/156 nations in Gender Equality. According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2021, it will take another 135.6 years to ensure Gender Parity.

Let us look at what each one of us can do to bridge this gap.

#1: Make a difference at your level

Each of us might be in different positions in our life. Asking the below questions will help us to know how we can contribute.

  • Employer: Is your workplace safe for women? Does the incentive systems ensure that women can rise to the top? (Breaking away the Glass Ceiling effect)

  • Employee: Are you giving due credit to the work done by female members of your team? Does your daily office conversations reflect respect for women?

  • Parents: "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" - Am I treating my daughter the same way as my son? Am I investing in the education of my daughter?

  • Students: Am I raising my voice against any gender bias in my class?

#2: Enable Women to learn about technology

A Harvard Kennedy School study has estimated that in India, 71% of men use mobile phones, as against 38% of women. A combination of Patriarchy and a Protection mindset has caused this huge gap.

Do the female members in your family know to use technology better than you?? Your small act can start here.

Tech is being created by men and for men. We need a revolution of feminisation of technology. More women should be able to study and pursue jobs in the Tech sector.

#3: Spread Awareness

The least you could do is to spread awareness about the size of the problem. This article that you are reading is a small effort in that direction.

Have open conversations with your parents, friends and colleagues. Gender equality is more of a mindset that we need to develop.

"Feminism isn’t about making women stronger. Women are already strong. it’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength." - G.D Anderson

What are your thoughts about creating a Gender equal society?
